i thought i was the only victim, happens am not the only one… that’s how i got to know about this site after getting to hear that people have similar complaints.
so i get into one of the tuskys supermarkets, the one opposite city market, leave my luggage at the luggage bay and since my pockets are too shallow and my mom keeps complaining about me walking around with my phone in my hands – i threw my phone in the luggage.
i search for the product i wanted and since i cant find it, i to leave. i get back to the luggage bay, and whoever had given me the tag in exchange for my luggage is not there.
instead, there is a guy in a brown coat. he wont talk to or look at me. i ask loudly who is supposed to serve mi since there are two counters close by, and no one even gives me as much as a glance.
i take my luggage and leave. on my way past jamia mosque, i notice i don’t have my phone and when i go back to the supermarket, the manager tells me that am insane and i was never near that supermarket and cannot prove i was – because i didn’t buy anything.
i tell them to check about the guy in brown coat but they only laugh at me. i find this very insulting and disturbing and wanted to warn anyone else out there that if you have no choice but to shop at tuskys, BETTER BE WARY for i believe that come to think of it the staff of tuskys actually stole my phone and didn’t want me to see the clips because i would have caught one of them in the act in those clips.

I have noted that Supermarkets operated by Asian (Nakumatt + Ukwala, etc) ensure that shoppers get their change to the last shilling. Tusky’s is notorious for not giving by change {they even have photocopies of newspaper articles on coin shortage pasted at the check out counters}for those questioning them for not giving the correct change. I understand that Nakumatt + Tuskys are tight; can Tuskys find out how Nakumatt is able to have a sufficient supply of coins??

Totally agree with you winifred. i shopped at tuskys opp. city market today and bought five packets of milk, only to get home and find that only four were packed! the receipt shows i was charged for five and theres no way i lost it on the way so i suspect foul play. i dont know why i went back there because last time it was an incident with my change, i got less change and it seemed deliberate because when i asked about it the teller was rude. definitely not shopping at tuskys anymore.

I highly urge Tuskys management to change their BAD Habit of giving people SWEETS. We need our cash not those other nonsenses.
Try to benchmark with your competitors. Thanks

Hello guys. I love to shop at Tuskys but there is one thing I don’t like about fast moving junk food being cooked and sold along the bays. Are you really concerned about the health of Kenyans or your concern is just to make money and nothing else?I honestly feel that most of these foods are unhealthy. Can you do something please, if only you care.
Comment by Samuel — June 14, 2011 @ 11:38 am
Well, the Central Bank of Kenya has asked members of the public to put back into circulation any coins they may be holding by depositing or handing them over to retail outlets. Perhaps it is the habit of keeping coins in our homes, offices and cars that is creating the impression that coins are unavailable in supermarkets -retail outlets. I try to support indigenous local business & industries owned by Kenyan. It’s rare to find a supermarket like Tuskys that cares about people’s health soo much to an extent that sales of alcohol, cigarettes and harmful stuffs is prohibited.

I wonder why the tuskys at united mall kisumu has no air conditioners. The place is very hot. You guys cant be using only funs, bake inside the S/M and expect the air to be cool. Secondly you have no cameras or rather CCTVs.Due to this the place is always full of idlers who turn out to be thieves.I was robbed inside tuskys and one employee was like “pole sana madam, si watu wote hucome hapa hufanya shopping wengine ni wezi. we have had several theft cases before” What are you doing about this???

It happened to me at Ukwala. I left some stuff (eatable) and the moment I went back to find they have already eaten my stuff. 15 minutes, they’ve gone through my bag and fed themselves…
Comment by Johnie — July 12, 2011 @ 1:39 pm
A good thing to do regarding change not given is the following. Just collect a few sweets, next time you go pay the last few shillings with sweets – see what they have to say. I did it once in Bali (because I was sick and tired of receiving sweets instead of coins) and they had to accept it. You just tell them that if they consider sweets as coins why can’t you do the same to them? Good luck.

i came to realise 80% of there staff in tuskys are from one region they talk kikuyu most of the time and they have English names on there badges unlike uchumi and nakumatt supermarkets which is very bad i have been to Mombasa tuskys near GPO and the guys were speeking there language which is stupid . Also in nairobi i have been to many tuskys there is no customer care at all. They need to be trained thoroughly on customer relation.

Hi, am an ardent shopper of Tuskys and catch me dead doing my shopping in any other supermarket. True to it, I live behind Uchumi supermarket on Mombasa road but I do not shop there. This shows how much am attached to this Supemarket. However, there is one branch of Tuskys that bores me to death and am starting to suspect that it is not Tuskys but a franchise of the same. Reason, the employees there are so rude, slow, don’t care attitude and they do not give a dump about a customer. yesterday I went shopping at the branch near BS, yes, this is the one am talking about, the shopping was bulky so I requested for the luggage to be put in 2 separate paper bags so that I may be able to carry. Guess what this guy does, he throws them for me on the counter and told me to pack for my self and yes! I did pack for my self. This is not the first time am encountering such with this branch and have heard and seen several people complain. 4 months ago they even sold me stale cutex. can you imagine. Can the management do sth.

Luckily i still had the receipt with me and after producing the proof, i was on my hm quit frustrated about the situation. I could not believe my eyes. I went to Tuskys Imara @ 9.48pm as they were about to close and the man who was on till 13 told me he cannot serve me I have to go queue at a different cashier because that was the express counter of five items and I has eight items. I decided to reduce what I had picked but the cashier was still adamant and told me that I had six items and he couldnt still serve me. Well since I tired from a long day at work I had no choice, but to pick one item which I needed most and leave. SERIOUSLY IS THIS WHAT Tuskys PRIDES ITSELF WITH???????

I have been shopping in Tuskys for years and I have never had a problem until yesterday when I bought two mugs at Tuskys Buruburu. Since I trust Tuskys and I was in a hurry, I din’t check inside the box. To get home, I found one was completely broken. Since it was at night, I put off going back until today.
When I went to customer care, they gave me someone else to talk to. That person gave me someone else to talk to. That guy again tossed me to a guy apparently called Isaac. Isaac was really rude and said there was no way he could help me. I asked him if I could talk to the manager and he sent me back to customer care who called a guy apparently called Albert Muhu or something who posed to be the manager.
I have never been so rudely spoken to before.
Tuskys, if you want to retain your customers, you better deal with your staff at Buruburu and educate them on Customer Service skills.

i am a genuine customer at tuskys buru*2 branch and i happened to be there when the issue of the broken mug was being discussed. this particular customer was not straight because the first question she was asked was wether she checked the mug before picking and she said YES then again asked the same question she said ati no she just picked. how on earth would pick smthing without checking what it is and the condition. she was requested to fill a certain form but was so selfish. last week went shopping at Maguna Andu in Kerugoya,on reaching home realized not all my shopping was packed, among the things missing was a pack of 8eggs and tropical air freshener which were both charged on my receipt but was not packed,I don’t understand why if u buy anything that requires u to fill a warrant it takes so much time to be counter checked by a lady who has no idea where the serial no. of any electronic is,turning and turning whatever you buy then end up packing it upside down after an hour, making u leave your change that the’ll claim they never saw!!!
style up guys,or end up with a reputation like that of Cleanshelf where if u shop and forget anything at the counter, coming back after 2sec,the person n ur stuff have vanished.n no one cares.

Hey, this complaints and claims really irritate, TUSKY’S seems to be the culprit, why don’t we as buyers boycott shopping there, go to other supermarkets or if they offer some cheap damn sweets leave the damn goods on the counter and bounce to there competition yoh! and that tribal cashier/the ones stocking the shelves thing seems to answer the coins question, that’s when i feel like throwing someone out the window.

Love yourself first. Do not accept to be maltreated, if the persons at the till or at the shelves see you like some beggar, prove to them that you are worth billions. Do not shop where they see clients as bothersome, shop where they value clients and see them as
kings, queens, princess and prince. There still is a good side of Ukwala. I once bought goods and amongst them were 5 packets of 1 liter quencher juice packs. On getting home 2 packets were missing, I immediately called the numbers on the receipt and was requested to go see them the next day after work. They asked me a few questions just to clarify the exact packs that were missing and they did give what they had failed to pack. This was great. Kudos! Ukwala for the honesty.

Is the chemist inside the Tuskys opposite commercial on Tom Mboya street part of Tuskys? I once went to buy medication, the lady serving i believe if had the guts would have showed me the door. She was so unfriendly to an extent of giving me medicine worth 60/= yet I expected them to cost 1500/= or more. I declined what she offered me and went out in tears requesting God to send me to a chemist where they will listen to me and give me the right medication. That’s how I got to the one at the ground floor of Ambassador Hotel, God truly answered my prayer because the lady I talked to was even smiling at me, she carefully listened to my story and prescribed the right medication worth 1500/= and in 3 days I was as fit as a fiddle.

Panapo moshi hapakosi moto. Memei, all this ppl commenting above can’t simply have decided they have nothing better to do than conspire to badmouth a particular supermarket.. Truth be told, they really do give out sweets in lieu of shilling coins they claim they don’t have. A simple n casual inspection of their tills and u will see each cashier has an opened pack of cheap sweets next to them – pitiful really if u asked me. Tuskys is actually a very good supermarket but if they could just address the concerns of their loyal customers, it would help put out the glowing embers before they become a raging fire that will ultimately consume them alive – and yes, it can happen!!
Comment by Sletpan — December 15, 2011 @ 7:21 pm
The story about Tuskys chap chap (opposite City Market) are true. I beleieve the supermarket management is in collussion with employees and some conmen to rob customers especially during this festive season. I witnessed a scenario where a lady had just done christmas shopping for her kids on biashara street then she entered the supermarket to buy food a few minutes later when she came to collect her luggage in its place was a paper bag full of amigos snacks!! when she complained to the management they reacted as if that was no news and some even had the nerve to smile!! My question why is there no one to permanently guard the customers luggage? If the supermarket continues to receive such complaints and do nothing about it, it means they are in cohorts with the conmen!!

Since I could not pima, I trusted the size and left. On reaching home, It was smaller, I returned with the receipt and they acepted to change. I took the one written on XLL.Still, I could not unpack it. Believing that the wwas Okay, I left and threw away the receipt, unfortunately when i reached home, it was even smaller – “small”. I was dissapointed. Could not go back coz I threw away the receipt. I have thee shirt into a duster and swore never to go back there.

Theft by Ongata Rongai Tuskys Staff?
I do my shopping many times at the Ongata Rongai Tuskys. The behavour of the staff however puzzles, irritates and puts me off. Four times in a row whenever they pack my shopping they ensure that they “forget” to pack part of the shopping. They know very well that I cannot burn fuel to go back all the way to collect at Kes 100 or Kes 300 item. Whenever I call I am told that the staff forgot. This is very irritating and outright indirect theft. I think the supermarket engaged the wrong staff for the Ongata Rongai outlet. Fellow shoppers please take care and thank God Uchumi is coming up.

Theft by Ongata Rongai Tuskys Staff?
Attn. Tusky’s Human Resources
Attn. Tusky’s Management
We appreciate a good shopping experience. But please We have very, very weird staff staff at Tusky’s Ongata Rongai. Most staff 80% that we interact with are very good kudos. But a FEW!!!!!! You walk to do your shopping and then they immediately give you a DEAD FISH STARE and start following you around the store. I have shopped at many Tusky’s supermarkets all over the place. But this one is exceptional.
INaitwaa USHAMBAA!!in your language. Its as if you just brought them from the BUSH!. I am sure you gave them some Customer service training. What happened, were they asleep?
I don’t think that Customer service training tells them to STARE and then start stalking people around the aisles. Now I fully understand everything about theft prevention and such counter-measures. Do not get me wrong. We all including customers need to shop in a safe environment. We appreciate that. I am just saying that one or two of your employees displaying this BUSH Behaviour makes you look really bad.
I have been watching it for sometime. Anytime my boyfriend goes to buy a newspaper , he gets the *come hither* glare form the lady who works the day shift at the newspaper/music stand. It is sooo ridiculous. Are you paid to flirt?
You have another Team Leader who likes to deliberately bump into people, stare, follow around etc… You would think the guy owns the store. He is SIMON NW. He just lounges at the C.Service desk and when you are reaching for a shopping trolley, he intentionally comes and bumps into you. Then as you finish your shopping heading for the vehicle he starts making phone calls (to real or imagined friends outside.). I think he is very idle. You begin to get the idea.
We lead very busy lives. My Assistant is typing this but she has also observed this weird behavior at your Ongata Rongai store.
One tyme I came to the store with some friends from Britain and
they told me later they were very uncomfortable from the stares. So any time we have such visitors we go to Nakumatt. (They were very modestly dressed) I have been observing this strange behavior for quite a while (4months at least)I have to tell you most of your staff everywhere I have gone to is very disciplined, pleasant, cultured and helpful. I would like to see the same reflected above.. Yes Uchumi is coming up and it might be easier to shop there. Really this email is not a fraud. I wanted to pass by your head office to sort this out. Obviously there are security issues, that I have referenced to. But I have taken care of that angle. I just wish you guys would get into the habit of sending what we call *MYSTERY SHOPPERS*
We have this in the UK and it gives management alot of helpful feedback when this undercover shoppers go at all hours and observe these things.
I agree with the above shopper **I think the supermarket engaged the wrong staff for the Ongata Rongai outlet**.

Hi., just caught me by surprise about all the negative comments. While they can work on some of them, I must say Have been shopping at tuskys for over 10 yrs. I frequently go to other supermarket but can’t help to go back because prices competitive, u always find more products there and fresh, their cashier are fastest in nrb, its the only supermarket u get help to carry Guds to stage ie hakati branch, don’t sell beer and pray local christian music. Besides am in business and I understand how difficult it is to get coins even central bank. I gladly accept sweets because I know how hard they try! Keep up Gud work in tuskys . God bless tuskys!!

Nobody is ever forced to take sweets instead of change in tuskeys.sometimes its good when we are realistic. when coins are not available even in your bag or pocket wont you opt for a sweet anyway? or will you wait until we find out whether the next customer could be having a shilling.

funny when you leave your luggage in the supermarket to go your own way and afer you are done you come back for your luggage. and then you claim that your phone must have been stolen by the attendant. who is the most corrupt here…. you or attendant…did you pay the service for your luggage supervision in the first place…please dont be storing your luggages in supermarkets pretending to be customers.

some stores are too expensive, some too dirty, some downright incompetent to bear the name retail stores…..This is where tuskys comes in…clean, products affordable, fast service, and always well stocked…….surely all you complaining are not perfect coz your humans..and so are the stuff of tuskys…but at least they try better than most retail stores….stop hating and start seeing the positive side of this stores…or simply shop elsewhere……bless you tuskys
Comment by MFALME — February 26, 2012 @ 5:33 pm
Even then, Tuskys has no right to steal your products. They should institute a levy if this is a real issue.

Shop elsewhere is NOT response customers offering criticism should get. Neither is “we are better than what you will get anywhere else.” Someone tells you to pull up your socks, you pull them up or not. You don’t say well, mine are higher than the next guys!

Although, I must say I don’t mind the sweet solution, Tuskys must be aware some people do and this forum allows people who mind to air their views.By the way, Nakumatt don’t have this problem, and in my experience when they don’t have a shilling or two, they take the hit. They don’t ask you to take a sweet.

Tuskys have never had good customer care as instilled by management.
However, you get a few of their staff who don’t act like you owe them for walking into the shop.
They also tried by getting that firm to work with them – Omega or something..
But I know from 10 years experience, choosing to shop in Tuskys means be prepared for any & all types of mishandling, insults & uncooporativeness.
As for the coins, I myself have given back coins amounting to over 1500 in the past 6 months and I know am not in the minority. I always see customers queuing to give back when I have the misfortune to go there.
My number one choice for great customer care has always been uchumi, I have forgotten items and had them returned to me, I have had items replaced/ exchanged without fuss and been treated with dignity even when I picked the cheapest items on offer.

am not partisan about the debate, but i read mischief in the whole thing, especially on Tuskys. Every writer seems to lean so much on the cons with a few pros, which you trash vehemently, you make the company look like its made of dens of thieves, i believe this company has come from far and need a kudos rather than a spit on the face, my friend, by watering down the good side of tuskys, eastmatt, tumaini, ukwala wont change the customer perception of the said organization, the mutual trust between any organization and its customers is not build on rumuors, hate and ethnicity, but trust and goodwill from customers and its employers,
lets be fair in our critism
Comment by steve — March 16, 2012 @ 4:53 pm
I find it interesting that critics of Tuskys are saying please improve by doing some customer training and hiring a more culturally diverse team and Tuskys defenders are saying you are tribalists who hate one tribe or the other. The aim of this site is to allow customers a place to air their views and suppliers see what some (not all) customers think.
If someone tells you your socks are sagging, the correct response is “let me pull them up,” and not “stop hating on my culture of wearing sagging socks.”
All tuskys defenders. look for ways to improve Tuskys and avoid playing the ethnicity card unless you are saying its our right to hire whomever we want. Bringing hate into a debate on customer care is typically Kenyan in its childishness, short sightedness and damaging nature.
Please avoid it and focus on a healthy debate.

since no one is perfect in this world let us learn from our mistakes and act on them,i feel shop attendants should give the customer the right service whenever we have a chance to do so.They are the backbone of the business. My fellow customers i feel we should always the feedback.

I hope someone in Tuskys is reading all these.Customer service skills are lacking.Sorry but the attendants like to stand at a far corner and gossip in Kikuyu and when you ask something they dismiss you..That happened to me in Dec 2010.I have never ever stepped in Tuskys again!!!

I’m a Tuskys customer, their services are not that bad as most of us claim, they have alot of good staff and the management should see to it that the few elements does not spoil their name, because its is one of the respected brands.
Comment by Abel Kiprop — April 18, 2012 @ 10:43 pm
i agree with Abel. 80% coz my cousin once bought 2 cards and the cashier charged her for three cards which she just realised later from confirming on the receipt. so shoppers be aware of what they are charging you..it can happen in any supa so.. i dont blame it that much on you Tuskys.. i love TUSKYS…

I wish to register my complain on Tuskys supermarket.I went to shop for some supplement on the morning of 20/04/2012.
I picked a specific brand and left for the cashier. While on the cashier i realized i had picked the wrong brand and instead of returning it to the shelf i picked it from,i returned it on the near shelf, only for one attendant to pounce on me calling me a thief,i was subjected to alot of humiliation and am taking legal action against the supermarket, the attendant even roughed me up.i hear some attendants have this bad habit.Anyone listening???
Comment by Paul — April 20, 2012 @ 10:03 am
Paul, I thnk u should go ahead n do it. File whatever thing u wanna file on them. It aint cool what that attendant did to you. Because of him, shame on Tuskys. The management should be sorry. I aint no hater…but damn!!

Tuskys management is not in control of staff. The staff have so much freedom to & do anything to a customer. I left my bonus/loyalty card in Tuskys Imara and when i went for it i was told to apply for another one. The card had acumulated points into 000′s. From loyalty that day my shifted to Naivas. Am now happy in NAIVAS. Especially Naivas Kitengela.
Comment by George — May 2, 2012 @ 8:45 am
Dear fellow shoppers, honestly your comments are of high importance to Tuskys. This chain is one of the most grown Kenyan retailer from a humble and friendly beginning as you may all know. Just like any other business ,this kind of growth calls for an equivalent capacity in the HR and customer care which is a hard thing to perfect.
I believe your comments are viewed positively by the management who are now capitalizing on the said weaknesses for a continuous improvement.
Lets all love Tuskys, its our own Brand and will be the likes of South African Shoprite of tomorrow.

Ill never forget this woman at eastmatt supermarket kitengela who asked me if i am colour blind that i can’t differentiate the colour of some beauty products she was kept incharge, is that the way you train your staff? Stop employing idiots in your supermarket esp now the competition is so high. I am with naivas, uchumi and nakumatt

I find it hard to believe that most issues on this forum (MTEJA.ORG) are complaints about is TUSKYS, TUSKYS, TUSKYS. All other supermarkets are doing it right & there is nothing right about TUSKYS. Hmmmm… The last comment(Sue — May 4, 2012 @ 5:56 pm) shows how low she has sunk, mixing Eastmatt with TUSKYS. TUSKYS does have challenges to iron out, but the good does outway the bad….

Tuskys has the most arrogant employees. Today I went with my daughter to purchase her back to school goodies, i was told to go upstairs and get some pens for her, where i found that they got another till which I thought I could pay for all my stuff and take my child to school in time. I was shocked when they only took the pens and told me to go with the rest of the stuff on the ground floor tills to pay there. I left the stuff and went to Uchumi where I was served with dignity and in time. One day this guys will be out of jobs when a serious competitor comes in. And for your info, Tuskys is an equal opportunity employer. Regardless of the ethnicity, 99% of its staff is rude rude rude rude! I hope I never go back there again.

Hey Guys, I have read most of your complains above and am really sorry for all what you have gone through. I have worked for Tuskys for Eight years and especially on the customer service desks.I can proudly state that most of this issues i had dealt with them directly. With human nature and kind of traffic we use to get then at Tuskys, some of this issues might have happened.I apologise for that. A word of advise.:In all Tuskys Branches, there is always a customer care desk, kindly do not hesitate to visit this places anytime you are aggrieved. And when you are there, ask for help and dont bully this guys. They are human too and can get emotional. Thanks
